I don't recommend ot install L'Hiver mod for your first playthrough because it changes the gameworld. It changes the city which wouldn't be a problem. But it also adds land area to the game which is not so well populated and have no quests whatsoever and are there without anything interesting in it.

Install the system pack because it makes the the game run better. But the system pack isn't a mod. Gothic mods are not about changing the game rules. There are only a very few of that. Gothic is one of the games which doesn't need that. And I am a modder by heart an mod every single game I buy as long as it is humanly possible. After you played the game and you want more you can download total conversions like Velaya or you can try out the ultra hard Returning mod.
Steam only sells Gothic 2 Gold. That means you only need the patches for Gothic 2 Night of the Raven: 3. Install Gothic2fix-2.6.0.0-rev2.exe 4. Install Gothic2PlayerKit-2.6f.exe 5.

You can try to play Gothic 2 - Returning 2.0. Its a big mod with new content - a lot of new quests, new guilds (main and parallel), new mobs, new locations, a lot of new items, weapons, magic, skills, over 100+ hours of gametime, another system of balance, difficulty levels.
I am playing now on Hard level, have played over 15 hours but still can't join mercenaries, because can't win a duel with somebody of them, lol (have already 90 dex. And 60% bow mastery). Its a hardcore mode, on the HARD level I have some elements of survival - hunger, thirst and tiredness. Don't want to tell you all spoilers, just try it, its a beautiful mod. The only minus - u have to save your game really often, because of crashes.
